In order to adopt a child in Alabama, you must be at least 19 years old, be able to meet the physical and psychological needs of the child, and, unless closely related to the child, pass an extensive background check. Additionally, the parental rights of the birth parent or parents must be terminated. This is often accomplished by consent of the biological parent.
